Isabel McMillan Applegarth died peacefully on May 7, 2012 surrounded by her family. Born in Alexandria, Ontario, Canada, on Sept. 5, 1924, Isabel attended McGill University & graduated from the Royal Victoria School of Nursing. While working as a surgical nursing instructor at Roosevelt Hospital in New York, she met her husband of 60 years, Jerrold Applegarth MD. After relocating to San Francisco, Isabel & Jerry raised a family of nine children.
Isabel participated actively in many organizations, most notably, St. Elizabeth Auxiliary, Children of Mary, and the Schools of the Sacred Heart. Her heartfelt good humor and social nature suited her well in her memberships in the Century Club and the California Historical Society. She proudly carried on a family tradition of acting as chairwoman of the San Francisco Birthday committee for nearly 40 years.
She is survived by her husband, Jerrold Applegarth MD and nine children, David (Mel), Mary, Katherine, Alison(Ivan Javor), John (Nancy), Alex (Lane), George, Gregory (Francesca) Geoffrey. She was the beloved grandmother of 14 grand children who will miss their 'Mia' dearly.
A rosary will be held on Sunday May 13 at 3pm at Halsted N. Gray-Carew & English, 1123 Sutter St, San Francisco. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday May 14 at 10am at St Dominic's Church, 2390 Bush Street, San Francisco. Private family interment.
