James M. Yee, M.D.
James M. Yee, M.D.

June 23, 1942 - February 3, 2014
Resided in Piedmont, CA

James M. Yee was born in Peking, China on June 23, 1942 during the Japanese occupation in WWII. Jim, his younger brother, Robert, and his parents came to San Francisco in 1947 where he went to Lowell High School. While still in high school, he met Carole Mar on a blind date at a bowling alley. Although he thought he struck out, they were married at the tender age of 23 in 1965.

Following his desire to continue the family tradition of practicing medicine (dating back to Jim's grandfather who was the ophthalmologist to China's Emperor Pu-Yi), Jim decided to become a physician. Prior to completing his undergraduate education at University of CA. Berkeley, Jim was accepted to Stanford Medical School after which he continued his medical internship at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston and finished his residency at UC San Francisco. Jim's thirst for knowledge did not stop after only 13 years of medical education, however. At the age of 45, he got his pilot license and flew supplies to public health clinics in Mexico. He eventually learned how to sail, hike, scuba dive, and string tennis rackets as well. From 1971-1975, Jim and Carole settled down in Piedmont and became the proud parents of James Christopher and Alisa.

Jim's endless curiosity was only matched by his dedication to others. Starting out as a parent helping the Boy Scouts, Jim soon became a Scout Master and then Council President earning numerous awards along the way. Additionally, Jim's 35 years of dedication to his work at the Alta Bates Summit Medical Center was recognized by his selection as the Chair of Risk Management and Chief of Surgery as well as receiving two President's Awards.

During his spare time, Jim was a stage coordinator for children's community shows produced by "Ding Sum", a charitable service organization. He enjoyed playing Santa Claus, creating balloon arches, and managing the pyrotechnics. Jim also brought home this sense of community spirit by hosting large family gatherings, dinners, and events for the last 20 years.

In lieu of flowers the family wishes any memorial contributions be sent to: Ding Sum Inc.1600 Mason St. Suite 6 San Francisco, CA 94133.
