Thomas David Henwood died January 14, 2017 at UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco at age 74. He was born November 8, 1942 in Chicago. He attended the University of Illinois where he was a member of the Army ROTC and graduated with a degree in Engineering. Upon graduation he received his commission as Lieutenant and served in Korea during the Vietnam War. After returning from Korea, he attended business school at the University of Chicago where he met his wife of 48 years, Carol Ann Mulreany. Tom graduated with his MBA in 1969 and took a job as an equity research analyst at the First Boston Corporation in New York City, which melded his engineering training with his natural curiosity.
After starting a family, Tom and Carol moved to Summit, New Jersey where they raised their 3 children and lived for 25 years. He was actively involved in the community through his children's schools, their church, and as Trustee of Overlook Hospital. He rose through the ranks at First Boston as an equity research analyst, being honored as an Institutional Investor All-American Analyst on several occasions. In 1985, he became a portfolio manager and shortly thereafter started his first investment fund, which remained his professional passion for 30 years. Tom took great pride in the young people he helped mentor in the investment business over the course of his career.
In 1994, he moved his business and family to San Francisco where he ran or rode his bike to work each day into his seventies. He became a member of the San Francisco Golf Club and The Family club where he served as Treasurer and Camp Captain. His love of golf was further established as a member of Baltusrol Golf Club, Lahontan Golf Club, and Chileno Bay Club. He treasured the friendships he formed through all these organizations.
After being diagnosed with terminal Stage 4 Lung Cancer in 2009 Tom defied the odds by living 8 healthy, happy years. In 2011, at the age of 68, he completed the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. His courage and determination became a source of inspiration to all who knew him.
Tom is survived by his wife Carol, his brothers Richard and Bill, his daughters Blythe Harris and Lindsay Wilson, his son Tom Henwood Jr., their spouses and five grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to UCSF Thoracic Oncology Research, c/o Dr. Thierry Jahan, 1600 Divisadero St., San Francisco, CA 94143.
